Brasilia (Brazil)
2018
When the city planned by Oscar Niemayer was handed over to the government in 1960, around 500,000 inhabitants were envisaged. Almost 60 years later, the number of inhabitants has increased more than sixfold. Nevertheless, the streets seem deserted. A walk therefore creates an image that resembles the impression of 60 years ago. Photogenically, every angle of view poses itself anew and, in the interplay of the elegant, pleasingly staged building forms and details, offers attractive subjects for image compositions.
"Even 60 years after Brasília was built, the city exudes a startling modernity. If anything, the power of the sculptural buildings has gained expression through the patina of the decades. Architect and photographer Philipp Funke has explored the legendary buildings and presents his personal view of them. It seems as if the city and nature have continued to keep their distance from the buildings. In the flat landscape, the individual building structures stand out abstractly against the sky. It is particularly remarkable that the interior of individual houses can also be seen. On their barren concrete walls, the filtered daylight unfolds a captivating effect."
